The best manager is not always the best performer. While strong performance is important, so are criteria such as consistency, risk management, approach and operations. We analyse managers through different lenses to get a more complete picture.

Understanding the need for a manager is one of our primary considerations. When it comes to building balanced portfolios, it is important to find managers who are strong absolute performers and have limited correlation to other investment strategies in a portfolio. For example, CTA managers have not been the strongest performers recently, but in 2008, this strategy was among the best performing of all strategies and investors who had CTAs in their portfolios were able to limit overall portfolio losses.
